Ifaistio Anemotias- Lesvos | Ηφαίστειο Ανεμώτιας Κοιν.Σ.Επ
The village of Anemotia is built amphitheatrically on the slope of one of the four volcanoes that formed the petrified forest of Sigri. From the 1500 inhabitants it had until the 90s, it gradually decreased to less than 200 residents during the winter months, leading a group of young people to unite for the revitalization of the community.
Thus, in 2017, they founded the Social Cooperative “IFAISTIO ANEMOTIAS”, intending to revive the historical branch of viticulture, create jobs and income and bring people back to the area. Despite initial reservations, the cooperative succeeded in managing all its members’ vineyards throughout the entire production chain from cultivation to distribution. It further collaborates with independent local producers in the broader region, holding training seminars and thus creating a paradigm for similar ventures.
The cultivation is strictly organic, using agroecological methods and consists only of local varieties in arid vineyards. Kalloniatiko, Kountoura, the local black Muscat and Fokiano produce 4 wine labels; two red, one rosé and one white, and 4 labels in sacks. In addition, the cooperative also markets the distillates from the grapes and grape leaves.
However, “IFAISTIO ANEMOTIAS” is not only limited to viticulture but also cooperates with local associations and institutions in activities of significant added value for the region such as the mountain running race, cycling excursions, but also the Viticulture Festival that takes place every August and attracts a large number of locals and visitors through its diverse cultural programme with concerts, workshops, performances etc.
In the same context, as its member Michalis tells us, the partnership with Aegean Cargo Sailing strengthens extroversion and networking, is based on a common philosophy of ecological action and creates added value for the products through their promotion and transfer in our network.
