March 24, 2023Sykoutris Greek Delights I Syros
“Sykoutris” could be a synonym for Greek Delights or “Loukoumi”, given the history of this family and how it intertwines with this classic Greek dessert through the years.
The Sykoutris (Παραδοσιακά Λουκούμια Σύρου “Συκουτρής”) workshop first opened in Syros in 1928 by Georgios Sykoutris, father of Mrs Ntina Sykoutri – Andreiomenou who runs the workshop today, as you can see in the picture. However, the family’s connection to the art of “loukoumi” goes back even further, since the family of Georgios Sykoutris were running a dessert shop in Smyrna before the catastrophe of Minor Asia in 1922, who led Georgios Sykoutris to seek shelter as a refugee in Syros.
This more than 100-year old company nevertheless, doesn’t have only history to show as the multiple taste awards in their trophy case suggest. The workshop produces traditional Greek delights in classic flavours like Chios’ mastic, using pure mastic tears, rose, almond and bergamot orange flavours among others, while quite particular are the ones with “rose-sugar”, a traditional sweet preserve out of Chios’ rose.
Although Greek delights are the stars, the Sykoutri workshop also produces traditional Chalvadopites with almonds or peanuts and also Chalvadopites with a twist, where they add cranberries. In addition, they produce honey brittle with almonds in small quantities.
The Sykoutris family wants consumers to know that all products are made with the traditional recipes and with real and pure ingredients from Syros and Greece, when that is possible, including the water from Syros which for many attributes the special taste that Greek delights from Syros are known for. There are no preservatives whatsoever, to the extent that the delights don’t even have glucose, in an effort for them to be identical with the original, even at the cost of a shorter shelf-life. Lastly, all products are cut, packaged and cared for by hand, as a touch of homage to the workshop’s tradition and if we may add as a sign of love and care.
We could not be prouder to have the Sykoutris family as part of the Aegean Cargo family of producers!
