Voices from the Aegean: What People Say About Protecting the Monk Seals

This summer, Aegean Cargo Sailing had the pleasure of collaborating with SealGreece, an organization dedicated to protecting the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest marine mammals in the world. Our partnership brought us to the island of Folegandros, where sustainability, conservation, and community came together in a truly inspiring way.
Our captain, Loucas, originally planned only a brief stopover on the island as part of our sailing cargo journey. However, the Aegean winds had different plans. With strong winds making it unsafe to continue, our crew extended their stay in Folegandros for several extra days.
What could have been seen as a delay quickly turned into a blessing. The island revealed itself as a haven—not only through the rare and unforgettable sighting of local island village architecture and beautiful vistas, but also through its unique atmosphere, welcoming community, and flavors. The local cuisine, shared in Folegandros’ cozy restaurants, became part of the memory, blending perfectly with the island’s natural beauty.
Together with SealGreece, we experienced firsthand how important it is to preserve the delicate marine ecosystems of the Aegean, while also celebrating the cultural treasures of its islands.
In the end, our extended stay in Folegandros reminded us that sail cargo is not just about moving goods across the sea, but about embracing the rhythm of nature—where even unexpected changes lead to discoveries worth cherishing.
