Since the early 80s, Methymnaeos organic winery has been active in the village of Chidira in western Lesvos, reviving the age-old winemaking tradition and expressing the raw elegance of the island’s nature.
The first professional winery of Lesvos and one of the first certified organic wineries in Greece, Methymneos winery has shaped its identity according to three principles that highlight the power of wine to reflect the particular characteristics of the land and the place where it is produced.
In the once few vineyards of this remote mountain village, there is now an abundance of the variety Chydiriotiko, a red grape unique to Lesvos that was revived by the Lambrou family and is used exclusively for the three label’s wines – red, white and orange.
These grapes are grown in West Lesvos, in the volcanic crater that created the petrified forest and a soil rich in sulphur that protects the vineyards from disease and gives the wine a peculiar minerality.
The volcanic soil, combined with the livestock farming activity in the area, also favours an ecological approach to production, making use of the abundant and free manure. The result is entirely organic wines, produced naturally, from the cultivation of the vineyard to the way they are vinified and processed.
Following the aesthetic form of the land of Lesvos, variety, soil and production make up the pure result and the unique taste of Methymnaeos wines.
